MI2 is announcing another grant opportunity for MI2 member companies, set to open this September - The Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
What is the CRISI Program and How Can Metals Companies Benefit?
The CRISI Program is designed to invest in a wide range of projects within the United States, with the primary goal of enhancing railroad safety, efficiency, and reliability. This initiative aims to mitigate congestion at both intercity passenger and freight rail chokepoints, leading to more efficient travel and goods movement. The 2022 CRISI grant cycle saw multiple awards granted, totaling a substantial $1,427,462,902 across the nation. Although the grant is currently closed, there's good news for potential applicants. The program is expected to accept new applications in September 2023, providing a fresh opportunity for metals companies to pursue funding for their rail infrastructure needs.
Diverse Funding Tracks for Your Projects
Applicants are not limited to seeking funding for a single project. The CRISI Program offers various tracks, including Systems Planning, Project Development, FD/Construction, Research, Safety Programs, Institutes, and the intriguing Deployment of Magnetic Levitation Transportation Projects. This diverse range of options ensures that different types of rail projects can be considered for funding, catering to the specific requirements of each participating entity.
Eligibility and Cost Share Requirements
The CRISI Program extends its eligibility to a broad spectrum of entities, such as federally recognized Indian Tribes, rail carriers, transportation research boards, university transportation centers engaged in rail-related research, and non-profit labor organizations representing rail carrier employees.
It's essential to be aware that the grant comes with an 80/20 cost share requirement. This means the federal share of total project costs typically cannot exceed 80%, and the remaining 20% must be funded by another source outside of the grant.
