We were honored to welcome representatives from the Québec Government Office in New York to MI2 this week to explore the growing Kentucky–Québec partnership. With Québec being the No. 1 producer of primary aluminum in North America—accounting for 70 percent of total production—the synergy between our regions in the metals sector is strong and full of potential.
MI2 is a Kentucky-based nonprofit that provides collaborative, industry-led executive leadership to attract and promote advanced research, sustainability, commercialization, and talent development in Kentucky’s metals industry—and, ultimately, for Kentucky to be seen as the preeminent destination for metals innovation. Our mission to catalyze cross-sector collaboration and drive breakthroughs aligns perfectly with Québec’s ambition to expand its footprint in advanced manufacturing and green technologies.
During our discussions, MI2 leadership shared how our state’s universities, research centers, and startup community come together over shared problems in the industry. We outlined our flagship projects at our meeting illustrating the depth of expertise and infrastructure Kentucky brings to the table.
In turn, our Québec colleagues detailed their impressive ecosystem of hydropower-driven aluminum plants, world-class R&D centers like the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), and government-backed innovation grants.
We’re excited about deepening this collaboration and helping Québec connect with MI2’s robust ecosystem of industry, government, startups, and higher education. The future of advanced manufacturing is built on partnerships like this. We look forward to making Kentucky and Québec synonymous with cutting-edge metals innovation—and to the breakthroughs that will emerge when our regions work hand in hand.
