On October 30th, at the Kentucky Industry Conference, attendees gathered for a session on "The State of Metals Recycling." Moderated by Jennifer Betts of Magnar Metals, this panel brought together top recycling experts from four MI2 member companies to explore the future of metals recycling and the strategies needed to address the industry's evolving challenges.

Panelists included:

Jennifer Bogs, Director of Global Sustainability at Crown Holdings, Inc.
Bob Eviston, VP & General Manager at River Metals Recycling, a Nucor Company
Dr. Joshua Werner, CEO at Recyera

Throughout the session, the panelists provided valuable insights into the state of metals recycling, focusing on how innovation is shaping the future of the industry. Each panelist shared their perspective on sustainability practices, emerging technologies, and the critical need for circular economy solutions in the metals sector.

Dr. Werner highlighted the importance of advancing technologies that can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of metal recovery. His company, Recyera, is leading the charge with next-generation solutions that make recycling more sustainable and profitable.

Jennifer Bogs emphasized Crown Holdings’ commitment to reducing its carbon footprint through innovative recycling practices. As a global leader in metal packaging, Crown is pioneering new ways to incorporate more recycled materials into their products, while ensuring the process itself is environmentally responsible.

Bob Eviston discussed how the metals recycling industry is evolving, particularly in the context of global demand for sustainable metals. As a part of Nucor’s River Metals Recycling division, Bob explained how the company’s integrated approach helps drive efficiency, reduce waste, and meet the growing demand for recycled steel.

The panel also addressed challenges, including the need for better infrastructure, regulatory hurdles, and market volatility.

The discussion highlighted the importance of collaboration between industry leaders, policymakers, and recyclers to overcome these obstacles and create a more resilient and sustainable supply chain.

The session underscored the need for continued innovation and collaboration in metals recycling to meet the sustainability goals of tomorrow. Panelists encouraged attendees to look beyond traditional recycling methods and explore new ways to make the process more efficient, environmentally friendly, and economically viable.
